On May 13th, as we celebrated International Hummus Day, I found myself in the kitchen, attempting to prepare this beloved Middle Eastern dish for the first time. As a Mental Health Counsellor, I often look for deeper meanings in everyday experiences, and my hummus-making journey turned out to be a profound lesson in mental health. Each ingredient in hummus resonated with different aspects of our emotions and feelings, and the final delicious dish became a metaphor for the harmonious self we strive to become.

Chickpeas: The Foundation of Stability

The chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, form the heart of hummus. Their rich, nutty flavour and hearty texture symbolize stability and grounding. Just as chickpeas provide the bulk and substance to hummus, in our lives, stability comes from our daily routines and habits. Regular practices like exercise, adequate sleep, and a healthy diet form the foundation of our mental well-being. As I soaked and boiled the chickpeas, I was reminded of the importance of nurturing these habits to maintain our mental health.

Tahini: The Smoothness of Self-Compassion

Tahini, a paste made from sesame seeds, adds a smooth and creamy texture to hummus. This ingredient made me think about self-compassion. In the hustle and bustle of life, we often forget to be kind to ourselves. Tahini's richness serves as a reminder to smooth over the harsh edges of self-criticism and embrace our imperfections. As I stirred the tahini into the chickpeas, I felt a sense of softness and forgiveness that we should extend to ourselves in our everyday lives.

Olive Oil: The Fluidity of Adaptability

Olive oil, known for its health benefits, represents fluidity and adaptability. Life, much like Indian monsoons, is unpredictable. Our ability to adapt to changes and challenges is crucial for maintaining our mental health. As I drizzled olive oil into the hummus, watching it blend seamlessly, I thought about how important it is to remain flexible and resilient. This adaptability helps us manage stress and maintain our emotional balance, much like olive oil helps to bind the ingredients of hummus together.

Lemon Juice: The Zest of Positivity

Lemon juice brings a bright, tangy flavour to hummus, symbolizing zest and positivity. The tartness of the lemon cuts through the richness of the other ingredients, just as a positive outlook can pierce through the heaviness of negative emotions. As I squeezed fresh lemons into my hummus, their vibrant aroma uplifted my spirits, reminding me of the power of positivity. Embracing joy and finding pleasure in small moments can greatly enhance our mental health, providing a refreshing perspective on life’s challenges.

Garlic: The Boldness of Expression

Garlic, with its strong and distinctive flavour, represents the boldness of self-expression. In our culture, where community and family are kept on a pedestal, sometimes our individual voices can get lost. Adding garlic to my hummus, I was reminded of the importance of voicing our thoughts and feelings honestly and authentically. This boldness of expression helps build stronger connections and resolve internal conflicts, much like garlic adds depth and character to hummus.

Salt: The Balance of Boundaries

Salt is essential in hummus, enhancing all the other flavors. It symbolizes the importance of balance and boundaries in our mental health. Just as too much or too little salt can ruin a dish, in our lives, setting healthy boundaries ensures we protect our mental and emotional space. As I carefully measured the salt, I reflected on the necessity of balance in our relationships and daily interactions, creating a harmonious and fulfilling life.

Cumin: The Warmth of Connection

Cumin adds a warm, earthy flavour to hummus, representing the warmth of human connection. Our relationships are fundamental to our mental health, providing support and a sense of belonging. As I sprinkled cumin into my hummus, I thought about the importance of nurturing our connections and being present for others. This warmth and connection foster a supportive community, enhancing our emotional well-being.

The Whole Hummus: A Balanced Self

When all these ingredients come together, they create a delicious and balanced dish, much like the balanced self we aspire to be. Each component of hummus plays a vital role, just as every aspect of our mental health contributes to our overall well-being. By embracing the lessons from my hummus-making experience — stability, self-compassion, adaptability, positivity, self-expression, boundaries, and connection — we can cultivate a more balanced, resilient, and harmonious self.

So next time you pick a cracker or tear a pita bread to savour the delightful flavors of hummus, try to be mindfully aware of the ingredients that went into making it and reflect on the valuable mental health insights it offers. Like a well-crafted hummus, we are a blend of diverse ingredients, coming together to form a unique and beautiful whole.
