Parenting!
Such a simple yet powerful term. Right from the time of conception to the birth of your child, the day they graduate to the day they are married off and beyond, parenting never stops.
The expectations, the endless advice, the rights, and the fear of being wrong. The mystery of “Am I doing a good job?”, and the heartache of seeing your child growing oh so fast; All these situations and more, put so much pressure on our mental health without even noticing it.
In our Indian societies, everyone talks about “maa baap bagwaan saman hote hai” aka “parents are like our gods”, but very few of us talk about the pressures and the mental challenges these “god-like individuals” can face.
The pressure of everyone constantly saying, parents are never wrong, They know it all. BUT; What if we do not have the answer to everything, parents are allowed to make mistakes too. It is often forgotten that they are humans as well, who are trying to find their foot in the parenting world as well as have a life of their own.
Yes! Some parents do have additional help and some do not. Some are full-time parents and some, work professionally as well as manage their household chores. Irrespective, It does not get easy for either of them.
From the unseen challenges to the obvious cries for help, being a parent is not for the faint-hearted.
One thing that you as a parent can do is to create a budget on time. Take out time for yourself while keeping your child engaged with your partner, in-laws, or any other reliable source of help.
Another important thing to do is to focus on positive media and avoiding negative media surrounding parenting.
Look for more realistic solutions for your sleep routine, do not stress about what is lost in the past.
Make your child self-sufficient. Teach them to do their chores, sort out sibling differences themselves, do their bedding, among other things. This not only helps you as a parent but also your child to be more independent and strong.
Sometimes, all of these things might get very overwhelming. And you might need some help to deal with all these never-ending expectations and pressures. It might feel good to just vent out or to talk to someone without the fear of being judged.
